Local businessman runs for food pantry, challenge

KURT BEGALKA - kbegalka@shawsuburban.com

LAKE IN THE HILLS – He’s a manic, manic at the core. And he’s running like he’s never run before. Juan Juarez acknowledged he is relative newcomer to ultra-marathon running.

“I’d been a soccer player since I was 5 years old... I started running when I was 13,” said Juarez, a native of Mexico who immigrated to this country when he was 15. “I was in my senior year [in Chicago] when back then my math teacher [and one of my coaches] he told me, ‘Hey do you like running?’ I was like, ‘yah,’ so I started running with him.”

When his coach asked him to run a marathon, he agreed. But he was 17 back then.

“I’ve done nine marathons – total. But last year I did well,” said Juarez, a 38-year-old Carpentersville resident and owner of Solstice Technology Solutions in Lake in the Hills – a provider of computer hardware, software and accessories to businesses. But he never has run more than one marathon a year until now.

In partnership with Lake in the Hills resident Anastasia Andrychowski, a Palatine hair stylist he met at Lifetime Fitness in Algonquin, the father of two will run his third marathon in three months. The 50-mile Ultra-Marathon Ice Age Trail Race in Kettle Moraine, Wis., slated for May 8, follows on the heels of a 30-mile March 27 marathon along Chicago’s lakeshore and a 26.2-mile run Feb. 28 in Columbus, Ohio. His February time was 4 hours, 15 minutes.

Juarez runs four times a week, mostly on Saturdays and Sundays. Tuesdays and Thursdays are low-mile days. During a recent weekend he ran 18 miles on Saturday and Sunday – typically down the bike path near Route 31. He also does light weight training and peddles on the stationary bike.

“We’re always running, from 34 to 44 miles a weekend, to prepare for the 50-miler on May 8,” Juarez said. “I love long distance because it gives you a chance to think. You are kind of thinking about what you did and what you are going to be doing. I plan business strategy when I’m running. It’s a great time.”

Juarez worked his way up in the course of 20 years within the computer industry. He credits his rise to hard work, a willingness to learn, a good attitude and determination. He learned English from scratch, became a supervisor at age 22, and started his own company in March 2008.

“I always tell [my kids], doors are not going to open by yourself,” he said. “You’ve got to be able to work hard.”

Juarez said he and Andrychowski, 29, have been following a 21-week, ultra-marathon training program – working their way up from 23 miles per week to 53 miles a week.

“You have to run three 26-mile marathons within 90 days to join the Maniac Marathon Club. We decided to do something tougher than that,” Juarez said. “We also talked about helping the community.”

With that in mind, he and Andrychowski have decided to raise money for the Algonquin-Lake in the Hills Interfaith Food Pantry. They hope to collect $2,000, including $400 out of their own pockets. So far, they’ve raised $901. To donate, people can send a check to Solstice Technology Solutions, 1301 Pyott Road Suite 213, Lake in the Hills, IL 60156. Make the check payable to Algonquin-LITH Interfaith Food Pantry. For information, call Juarez at 847-658-2406 begin_of_the_skype_highlighting              847-658-2406      end_of_the_skype_highlighting, ext. 102.

“I told [Anastasia] if we’re going to beat up our bodies like this, we might as well do it for a good cause,” Juarez said.

Running is free, feeding people in need is priceless

As you all know, I have a huge passion for running. This year a great friend of mine (Anastasia) and I have decided to become part of the Marathon Maniacs club, to do so you are required to run 3 marathons (26.2 miles is the distance of a marathon) within 3 months.  Well, we decided to challenge ourselves even more.  We did a marathon on Feb 27th, we are doing a 30 mile ultra-marathon on March 27th and we will end our journey with a bang, which is running a 50 mile race on May 8th.

We have decided that if we are going to be in so much pain with training and running these races, we want to help people in need.  That’s why we decided to help the Algonquin/Lake in the Hills food pantry (www.alith-foodpantry.org). We are all aware that the economy has been tough on so many families and the food pantries are having a tough time keeping up.

Please help us by donating non-perishable food or if possible by donating money. The food pantries are able to buy a lot more food with money than we can,  because they buy it at discounted prices. Any amount or any food will be very much appreciated.  These are some of the ways you can help:

Donate food or money for every race we run (we already ran the first one).  Here is the link to our results:

http://www.premierraces.com/LastChance/Results/2010OverallMarathon.txt

Donate money for every mile I run, $.10, $1.00 or whatever you can afford per mile.  Just keep in mind it will be 106 miles total. (my company Solstice will be donating $3.00 for every mile I run)

Donate a onetime amount, anything you can afford will be very much appreciated by me, Anastasia and the food pantry.

The flyer has addresses to where you can drop off the food or where you can mail a check. If you decide to donate money per mile, please let me know and I will keep track of it…

Please remember that the feeling you will get helping out is priceless.  Thank you, God Bless you and your families and pleas keep us in your prayers so we can remain healthy and strong.

Maniac Marathon Runners!!!

Having issues with your HP Proliant Upgrades

One of my largest accounts was having the issue below:

I would like to get an HP rep out here to prescribe a solution for this. Here’s the particulars...

I have a DL380G4 that has a LSI SCSI 2000 Series that has 2 ports on it that connects to the drives of a MSL6000 Series Library

I also have a Q-logic fiber card that connects to a MSA1500 CS storage works.

Both are PCI cards. I want to move these connections over to a DL380G6. how can I get these two devices (The MSL & MSA) connected to the new server?

The solution, we found that buying two Riser cards was way cheaper than having to purchase brand new cards that fit into the new DL380 G6.  Therefore, my customer paid $200.00 for two Riser cards, instead of $2200.00 which the new two cards were going to cost him and he is not losing any speed at all…

If you are having issues upgrading your new HP Proliant, please call me and Solstice along with HP will help you find the best possible solution…

HP to buy 3Com for $2.7 billion

The tech giant also preannounces higher quarterly earnings and raises the forecast for its new fiscal year.

By David Goldman, CNNMoney.com staff writer

November 11, 2009: 4:54 PM ET

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- Hewlett-Packard Co. announced Wednesday it will purchase networking company 3Com for $2.7 billion, and also preannounced higher fiscal fourth-quarter earnings and raised its outlook for fiscal 2010.

The deal is worth $7.90 per share of 3Com (COMS), which is 39% higher than the stock's closing price of $5.69 on Wednesday.

"By combining HP ... with 3Com's extensive set of solutions, we will enable customers to build a next-generation network infrastructure that supports customer needs from the edge of the network to the heart of the data center," said Dave Donatelli, HP's vice president of networking, in a statement.

3Com took in $1.3 billion in revenue last year on its networking and securities solutions products. The Marlborough, Mass.-based company mostly does business with corporate clients, and its H3C networking unit is a market leader in China.

HP (HPQ, Fortune 500) said it made the acquisition to expand its networking solutions offerings and to "significantly strengthen the company's position in China."

Over the past year, HP has increased its services and business solutions business exponentially, catapulted by its $13.9 billion acquisition of services firm EDS last year.

In addition to the 3Com acquisition, HP also announced preliminary financial results for the its fiscal fourth quarter ended in October. The tech giant said it will report earnings of 99 cents per share, up 18% from last year. Excluding one-time items, earnings were $1.14 per share, HP said.

Revenue will come in at $30.8 billion, which was down 8% from a year ago, the company added.

Analysts surveyed by Thomson Reuters, who typically exclude one-time items in their estimates, expected earnings of $1.12 per share and revenue of $29.8 billion.

HP also upped its guidance for fiscal 2010. The company said it will record revenue between $118 billion and $119 billion, up from its previous estimate of $117 billion to $118 billion. Full-year earnings per share estimates were increased to $3.65 to $3.75, up from its previous estimate of $3.60 to $3.70.

7 tips to manage your files better in your computer

You work with documents, presentations, graphics, and other files all day—and chances are, you have a lot of them. And that means it takes time to find the documents you need. Even if it's just a couple of minutes here, and a couple of minutes there, it all adds up.

But there is a better way to stop the file clutter—by managing your files more effectively. Digital files are no different than paper files, and if you don't have a good method of organization, things get lost.

Whether you save your files on your computer's hard drive or a shared network location, these tips will help you save the time and headache of searching for files. And if you haven't already familiarized yourself with the search features in Windows Vista, this is the perfect time to learn more.

Check out the reader tips. We've gotten hundreds of great comments on this article from the content feedback tool at the bottom of the page. And many of you left tips you use to organize and find your files. We updated this article to include some of the tips we received.

7 tips for managing your files

Use these tips to help manage your files.

1.       Use Documents. For many reasons, it's smart to take advantage of the Documents feature (called My Documents in Windows XP and earlier versions) in Microsoft Windows. To open Documents in Windows, click Start, and then click Documents. Documents provides an easy way for you to store your personal documents.

By using Documents, you will be better able to:

o    Find files. Windows provides easy access to the Documents folder (and its subfolders) in many places: through the Start menu, the task pane in Windows Explorer, common File Open and File Save dialog boxes, and other places.

o    Back up files. You should back up files regularly—and keeping all your files in one place helps make backup a snap.

o    Keep files separate from programs. By separating document files and program files you reduce the risk of accidentally deleting your documents when you install or upgrade programs.

2.       Adopt consistent methods for file and folder naming. Develop a naming scheme for the kinds of files you create most often and then stick to it.

3.       Keep names short. Even though Windows allows you to use long file names, it does not necessarily mean you should. Long file names are harder to read.

Let your folder structure do some of the naming. For example, rather than create a file called Great American Novel Chapter One First Effort.doc, you can build a structure like:

Image001

4.       Separate ongoing and completed work. To keep the Documents folder from becoming too unwieldy, use it only for files you're actively working on. As a result, you can reduce the number of files you need to search through and the amount of data you need to back up. Every month or so, move the files you're no longer working on to a different folder or location, such as a folder on your desktop, a special Archive folder, flash drive, external hard drive, or even on a CD.

5.       Store like with like. Restricting folders to a single document type (or predominantly one type) allows you to take advantage of folder templates in Windows Explorer. This makes it easier for you to find files. For example, with all your graphics in a single folder, it's easy to use the Filmstrip view and slide show feature in Windows Explorer to find the right picture for your newsletter.

6.       Avoid big folder structures. If you need to put so many subfolders in a folder that you can't see all of them at a glance, consider creating an alphabetic menu.

Image002

7.       Use shortcuts and shortcut links instead of multiple copies. If you need to get to the same file from multiple locations, don't create copies of the file. Create shortcuts to it instead. To create a shortcut, right-click on the file and click Create Shortcut. You can drop and drag the shortcut to other locations.

8 reader tips

Thanks to all the readers who left their own helpful tips and comments on this article.

1.       Use abbreviations. Keep file names short by using common abbreviations, such as "MTG" for meeting or "ACTG" for accounting. This makes the file names more descriptive and you can more easily find files through Search if it's necessary.

2.       Use thumbnails. Search through folders in the Thumbnail view. They're easier to see and you can put a picture or clip art on the folder (see how below) so that it's more easily recognizable. For example, a folder that contains information about a product can have a picture of the product—or something else that reminds you of the folder contents.

To view your folder list in Thumbnail view, on the Documents folder, in the toolbar click View and then select Thumbnail.

To put a picture on the folder, right-click the folder and click Properties. In the Properties dialog box, click the Customize tab. In the Folder pictures area, click Choose Picture.

3.       Use common names. To make it easier to search for documents, name your files and folders with easily found names, such as model numbers, project names, or the project lead in the title.

4.       Don't save unnecessary files. Be selective about the files you keep. You probably don't need to keep them all. With e-mail, for example, you rarely need to keep everything you receive.

5.       Use Recent Items. To find a file you just worked on, use Recent Items (called My Recent Documents in XP) in the Start menu.

6.       Put Documents on the desktop. Put a shortcut to Documents on the desktop. You can save several clicks of the mouse to get where you want to be sooner.

7.       Organize files by dates. Use a date in the document name. Such as jeb100201, which would mean October 2, 2001. This puts all the Jeb materials together and sorted by date.

8.       Color code your folders. I have a third party program which allows me to "color" certain folders in Documents that I use every day. This allows me quick access to open or save a document
